Model Custom Ad Formats User Guide

Created by Kristen Moegling, Modified on Fri, 16 Aug at 11:21 AM by Kristen Moegling

Step 1: Enter the name and description for your custom ad format and select the proper channel and device. Scope3 models all channels and devices independently so that we can be specific about the emissions attributed to each. In the reporting identifier(s) field, enter an ID for your ad format that can be used for measuring creative emissions.

Step 2: Enter the width and height of each image asset included in the final creative (images, logos, etc). If the ad format is responsive, enter the maximum size for the specific device selected. Only enter those assets that are downloaded on the initial render. For example, if your ad format is a carousel but only downloads the first image on render and requires the user to click through to load additional images, do not include the additional images.

If you have an out-stream or in-banner video format that does not autoplay and only loads a cover image before user interaction, add the dimensions of that cover image here.

Note: Audio-only assets are not currently supported.

Step 3: Choose if the ad format is embedded within the content or if it takes over as the primary experience while playing. For instance, a mid-roll ad is the primary experience during the ad break, and content is not played while viewing the ad. For ads that are embedded in content, enter the width and height of the ad format.

Step 4: Provide Scope3 with video asset information such as autoplay, skippable, duration,, and video. For ads that do not autoplay, you should have loaded information in the previous section on the image rendered before play begins.

For Primary Experience Video Ads:

  • If the video asset is skippable, select either the default video player or a player specifically modeled by Scope3 for your organization.
  • If the ad format is not skippable, select the maximum duration of the video asset and either the default video player or a player that has been specifically modeled by Scope3 for your organization

For Embedded Video Ads:

  • Specify the width and height of the video asset within the ad format.
  • Select the maximum duration of the video asset and either the default video player or a player that has been specifically modeled by Scope3 for your organization. If you have a proprietary video player that you would like Scope3 to model, click on the Don’t see your video player? Contact Scope3 link to request it.

Step 5: Enter the size (in kilobytes) of any additional code or assets that are included in the ad format. This includes html, fonts, javascript, CSS, SDK compiled code and overlays. If the size is variable, use the average combined size.

(Note that this does not include any advertiser-provided tags, trackers, or images and videos that were previously added)

Step 6: Select a thumbnail that will visually represent your ad format. Thumbnails are used as visuals only and do not have an effect on carbon emissions. In the righthand pane, you will see the carbon emissions for your ad format with and without consumer device emissions. When ready, click the confirmation box that certifies that the data entered is correct to the best of your knowledge and save the ad format either as a draft or immediately as live.

Step 7: Review and compare your formats. Click on edit to review your entries or to change the status from ‘draft’ to ‘live’.  Here you can also create a copy that can be modified from the original or delete ad formats that are no longer used.

Step 8 : Additional identifiers can be added to existing ad formats using the 'Manage Identifiers'

Enter a new identifier and assign it to an existing ad format. Click the Save button to finalize your changes.
